Scattering Gospel Seeds

When I was in college this parable was one a handful of Scripture passages that moved my church to action. With the image of scattering the seeds of the Gospel in mind we decided to witness to our neighbors living around the church. Trained in Dialogue Evangelism and armed with Gospel tracts, we were sent out in pairs into the neighborhood.

I was sent out with an elder. Near the end of our first night in the neighborhood a woman partially opened her front door. I shared the introductory comments. She quickly said, “No, thank you” and started to close the door. I reacted by tossing a tract through the closing door. Unfortunately, my hand got caught in the closing door. I was embarrassed and in some discomfort. The elder highly recommend I not force tracts through closing doors or mail slots.

Two years later I met a woman named Janel at church. She asked if I remembered her. I said I did not. Janel said that she had once slammed a door on my hand. She said initially she was going through away the tract I shoved through her door. Instead, she put it in a furniture drawer. She continued that, a couple of months earlier, she personally hit rock bottom. By chance she found the tract, read it several times, and prayed to Jesus. The church address was on the tract, so she got up the courage to visit the church.

Janel was baptized four months later.

In Janel’s life, the seeds of the Gospel initially fell along the hard packed path (v. 4). A couple of years later, the seeds found her heart as good soil. (v. 8) Then God brought the harvest.

Until next week, the Lord bless and guide.

  1. Your experience with the elder and the woman at the door is so relatable. It’s those small, imperfect moments that often stick with us and teach us about grace.
