Perspective is one way God grants us peace.
There are undercurrents of concern in the United States nearing the 250th anniversary the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Political discourse is polemic. Racial tensions that burst during the pandemic seemingly simmer under the surface of society. What if terrorists decide that the 250th celebrations is a prime time to again disrupt American society?
The Prophet Zechariah was called to minister to people who were also experiencing uneasy times. The people of God had returned to their homeland of Judah from the Babylonian exile. But Judah was anything but secure, surrounded by enemy countries. These countries were more than willing to share their false gods with the people of Judah.
In the midst of political and social unrest, God inspired Zechariah to prophesy about the Messiah. In verse nine Zechariah describes Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem to start His passion. Verse ten describes how one day Jesus will bring peace to all nations, after His triumphant return in judgement. In this way God shifted the people of Judah’s perspective. While for the moment they faced struggles, one day the Messiah would bring true universal peace.
God grants us this same shift in perspective. Instead of obsessing on society’s tensions, we focus God’s promise of a new heavens and new earth. In this way God grants us peace today, giving us strength to face current challenges.
Until next week, the Lord bless and guide.
