“The Mighty Hand of God”

Our Scripture meditation is based on 1 Peter 5:6-7 from next week’s Epistle Lesson, which is the Seventh Sunday of Easter. For a meditation on next week’s Gospel Lesson, click HERE.

[6] Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, [7] casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

As Christians we are called to lives of humility. We are blessed that God forms and shapes us into such lives, which is clear from today’s Scripture passage.

The Apostle Peter’s reference to “the mighty hand of God” brings to mind God delivering the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. (Exodus 3:19, 6:1). Likewise, “the mighty hand of God” recalls God’s delivering us from slavery to sin through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

We are humble before God and before our neighbor because we know the grace we have received from God. In verse seven we see that this grace did not stop at our baptisms. We continue to rely on “the mighty hand of God” in our daily lives, such as when we cast our anxieties on our Lord.

Pride and self-sufficiency are of no benefit to us. We could not save ourselves from sin and eternal judgement. We can’t sustain our faith in Christ by our own power. Thus, we find great comfort for “the mighty hand of God.” Knowing God’s care and support, we are free to live with humility.

Until next week, the Lord bless and guide.
