“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save…”( Zephaniah 3:17a)
Advent is a great season to rekindle our interest in the Old Testament. This is good because God uses all Scripture to strengthen our faith.
Some old testament prophecies about Jesus are intriguing. Consider the words of the prophet Isaiah:
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)
How this must have sounded to the original hearers! A virgin shall conceive? Then she will bear a son? It is only by knowing Jesus that this passage truly makes sense.
Additional Old Testament prophecies are more subtle. Consider Zephaniah chapter 3. Reading the chapter any Christian might think, “This sounds vaguely familiar.” Once the reader gets to verse 17 it’s as if a light comes on.
“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save…”
Zephaniah is prophesying about Jesus! Jesus, true God, came to be in the midst of God’s people. Jesus, who came to save the world. Jesus, the Messiah.
With society pressuring us to compromise or abandon our faith and convictions, it’s all the more important Christians to receive God’s Word. Advent is the perfect season to draw us into the Bible, especially the Scriptures foretelling the coming of Jesus.
