Our Scripture meditation is based on Luke 24:25-27, part of next week’s Gospel Reading, the Third Sunday of Easter. For a meditation on the Epistle Lesson, click HERE.
[25] And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! [26] Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” [27] And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Next week’s Gospel Lesson is the account of two disciples of Jesus traveling to the village of Emmaus. It’s an amazing story which has surprising implications for us.
After Jesus’ resurrection, two of his followers were traveling to Emmaus. Jesus joined them, although initially didn’t reveal himself to them. Jesus was another stranger, traveling alone on the same road. The disciples were talking about Jesus’ crucifixion and the reports of His resurrection. Most importantly, these two travelers expressed doubts about whether this Jesus was truly the Messiah. The above verses give Jesus’ response, first chiding their unbelief in the Scriptures concerning the Messiah, then explaining that very Scripture to them. Later that night, Jesus revealed Himself to these disciples, then left their presence.
In a very real way we can join these disciples on their journey. We have access to the same Scripture that Jesus unpacked on the road of Emmaus. We have the books of Moses and the teachings of the prophets. Let that sink in for a moment. The same truths that were revealed to the Emmaus disciples are gifted to us.
In addition to having access to Bible studies and Bible teachers on this subject, we also are taught by God. While Jesus is not physically walking alongside us, we are blessed by the Holy Spirit. In John chapters 14 and 16 we’re told how the Holy Spirit will teach us and guide us in truth. The Holy Spirit also gives us understanding what God has provided us. (1 Corinthians 2:6-16. This makes sense because the primary work of the Holy Spirit is to connect people to Christ.
Until next week, the Lord bless and guide.
