Attitude Adjustment

Our Scripture meditation is based on Isaiah 9:1-2, the start of the Old Testament Lesson for next week, the Third Sunday after the Epiphany. For a meditation on the Gospel Lesson click HERE.

[1] But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. [2] The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.

This passage was important to me today because I needed a shift in attitude. From time to time, I imagine you as well would benefit from an attitude adjustment.

I’m certain I’m not alone in this particular struggle. Society was weighing me down. Public celebrations of immortality. Blatant disrespect for God. False religions elevating apostate teachers.

I found myself wanting shelter from the waves pushing against Christ and His Church. It was a gut reaction. It was thinking of these people outside the church as threats.

Then God spoke through His Word: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.”

This is a prophesy about Jesus. Our Lord is that great light who came for those in darkness. People in darkness who celebrate immorality and disrespect God and promote false religions. Jesus not only came as the great light for such people, He gave His life for them.

Thanks to this (and similar) Bible passages, I have again started to see those outside the Church as people loved by God.  That required an attitude shift brought by God through His Word.

Until next week, the Lord bless and guide.
