True Wealth

Our Scripture meditation is based on Luke 12:32-34, from next week’s Gospel Reading.

[32] “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. [33] Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. [34] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

God has given us freedom from being controlled by the desire for worldly wealth.

Our fallen natures lead us to an unhealthy desire for worldly wealth. We feel such wealth will give us stability or stature, success or safety. There is a very real risk that worldly wealth will supplant God in our lives. We end up trusting ourselves for our daily bread.

Remember what Jesus teaches us in Matthew chapter 6:25: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” In fact, Jesus ends this brief teaching exhorting us to seek first his Kingdom, then all these things will be provided. (Matthew 6:33)

When God brought us into His Kingdom, Jesus rearranged our priorities. Instead of obsessing on ourselves, our attention is focused on God. God himself becomes our “treasure,” our relationship of greatest value.

God reaffirms this relationship by reminding us that the Kingdom will not end. (Luke 1:31-33) Our residency in God’s Kingdom will continue in heaven and the new heavens and new earth. God is not only providing for our daily needs, but eternal needs as well.

Until next week, the Lord bless and guide.
