Blessed Today and Eternally

Our Scripture meditation is based on Hebrews 2:17-18, part of the epistle reading for next week.

[17] Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. [18] For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

This passage illustrates how God is deeply concerned with our eternal life and our daily life.

The author of Hebrews makes it abundantly clear that Jesus became fully human. Hebrews 2:14 states that Jesus part took in our flesh and blood. In verse 17 were told he became like us in every way. The understanding that Jesus is both true God and true man is non-negotiable in Christianity.

Jesus being fully human allowed him to become our “propitiation.” Propitiation means Jesus substituted himself to pay the price for sins and reconciled us to God. Since we are reconciled to God, through faith in Christ we are spending eternity with God.

Yet Jesus becoming true man has another impact on our lives. We’re told that, because Jesus “himself suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” This demonstrates God personal interest in what is happening in our lives here and now. God is not only ruling in heaven, waiting for us to join him. Instead, God is actively participating in our lives, as outlined in his Word.
