Affirming Security

Our Scripture meditation is based on 1 Corinthians 12:14-20, part of the Epistle for next week.

[14] For the body does not consist of one member but of many. [15] If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. [16] And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. [17] If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? [18] But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. [19] If all were a single member, where would the body be? [20] As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.

In this passage the “body” is the “body of Christ,” an analogy for all Christians. The analogy demonstrates that God gifts us with a strong sense of security.

We are secure because we are more than just a collection of people, more than an organization, even more than a community. When Jesus forgave our sins and brought us to faith, we become part of a body. Just as nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ (Romans 8:35-39), so God also keeps us all connected in the body of Christ.

We also gain a sense of security because we recognize God has given us our own places in the body of Christ. For this reason, each part of the body of Christ is important. Again, because God gives us our place in the body, our part is important.

Finally, security comes from knowing God has created the body to support itself. We have opportunities to care for or encourage fellow believers. At the same time, God has gifted the encourage or care for us.

God has made us the Body of Christ, believers bound together by faith.
