Our Scripture meditation is based on Philippians 1:3-6, part of next week’s Epistle reading in the LCMS three-year lectionary.
[3] I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, [4] always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, [5] because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. [6] And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
The promise in this passage isn’t just for the Christians in the church in Philippi. The promise is for all Christians.
What does the Apostle Paul when he said God would bring to completion the good work he had begun in us? God the Father would complete his work of…
- reaching the spiritually lost through us. (Matthew 28:16-20, John 20:21)
- sanctifying us in the faith. (John 17:17, Hebrews 2:11)
- strengthening our faith. (2 Corinthians 1:3-5, Colossians 1:9-13)
- bringing us to be with him for eternity. (John 11:25-26, John 15:1-4)
One reason we are so confident that God will bring to completion this work is that God was faithful in sending the Messiah. From the first Messianic prophesy while addressing Satan in Genesis chapter three to Jesus’ birth in Luke chapter two, God was faithful. Just as God faithfully brought Jesus among us, so the Father will faithfully complete his work in us.
