Our Scripture meditation is based on Ephesians 6:12, from the start of next week’s Epistle reading.
[12] For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
The distinction between temporal and spiritual struggles is abundantly clear in this passage. Once we identify that distinction, our understanding of such struggles often becomes muddled.
We acknowledge we struggle against “spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm.” But what does this look like in real time? Temptations to sin can indicate spiritual struggles. Depression can stem from spiritual oppression. Poor or negative attitudes can have satanic origins.
Spiritual warfare can be intimidating. We’re fighting against an unseen opponent; from a realm we can’t enter this side of heaven. This opponent at one time considered himself powerful enough to challenge God. Take heart. Remember that God the Holy Spirit dwells within us. He who is with us is more powerful that the one outside of us. Spiritual attacks don’t last forever. God will lead us through our spiritual struggles.
It is increasingly common for people who are dealing with depression or other emotional struggles to see a licensed counselor. If you are facing such a struggle, I strongly recommend first making an appointment with your pastor. There could be a spiritual root to your emotional trial. Maybe your pastor can provide the guidance you need. If the root issue is not spiritual, your pastor might refer you to a counselor.
This is not only my recommendation, but also my practice. I see my pastor before seeing a counselor or therapist.
May our Lord grant us confidence as we face spiritual opposition. Remember: The day is coming when we, in God’s presence, will no longer face such spiritual opposition.
