Doxology

Our Scripture meditation is based on Ephesians 3:20–21, the end of the  Epistle reading for next week.

[20] Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, [21] to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

This is a doxology written by the Apostle Paul, an expression of praise about God and to God. But who are we as poor sinful beings to offer such glory to God?

This doxology starts with our acknowledging God’s greatness. The Lord is so mighty that he can provide more than we could ever request. In fact, we can’t even conceptualize what God can do.

Then Paul surprises us. God can do this with the power that is already at work inside of those of who believe in Jesus. Let that sink in for a moment. Inside of you and inside of me is a power than can do more than we can ask or think.

What is inside of us? God the Holy Spirit dwells within us. (1 Corinthians 6:19, Romans 8:9) This indwelling happened when we were brought to faith in Christ. For most of us, this was in baptism. In the Word and water, God forgave our sins, created saving faith, and granted the indwelling the Holy Spirit.

This answers the question I posed at the start of this devotion. How can we as poor sinful beings give such glory and honor to God? We do so through faith in Christ, who washed away our sins and made us right before God. In fact, it is this grace moves us to give all honor and praise and thanksgiving to God.
