The Passover Lamb

Our Scripture meditation is based on Mark 14:12, the start of the Gospel reading for Maundy Thursday.

[12] And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”

If only we could know Jesus’ thoughts when his disciples asked him about preparing for the Passover.

The sacrificial lamb was the heart of the observance of Passover. Jesus was about to become the new Passover lamb. Once Jesus was sacrificed for the sins of all people, no additional sacrifice would ever be necessary.

If only we could know Jesus’ thoughts when his disciples asked him about preparing for the Passover.

The disciples wanted to know where the Passover lamb would be sacrificed. Jesus could have told them. He could have said he would be sacrificed on Golgotha.

If only we could know Jesus’ thoughts when his disciples asked him about preparing for the Passover.

The disciples wanted to prepare the sacrificial lamb for Jesus. In reality, Jesus had spent his earthly existence being prepared to be the spotless Lamb of God.

We might want to know what Jesus thought when his disciples asked about preparing the Passover. But we don’t need to know what Jesus’ thought. God has revealed what we need to know in Scripture. This is especially true during Holy Week, when we hear what is essential for our faith in Christ’s passion.
