“Why Is Jesus Taking So Long?”

We’re starting the week in the Word with 2 Peter 3:8-9, part of the epistle reading for the coming weekend.

[8] But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. [9] The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

“Why is Jesus taking so long?”

I wasn’t surprised at the question. Ever since Jesus’ ascended into heaven, I’m certain a percentage of each generation has asked this question. Why is Jesus’ second advent taking so long?

I was surprised the question was asked by a junior confirmation student. Why would a baptized believer with so little experience in life ask such a question?

Those who ask this question today often focus on the evil in the world. They are responding to the crass immoral behavior that is celebrated in the western world. They are reacting to states such as Ohio legalizing killing unborn children at any point before birth. They are concerned about war in Israel.

By the time she was confirmed, I had a sense that this confirmation student asked the question because of tragedies her family suffered. Personal trials are another reason we wonder why our Lord is seemingly delayed in returning.

We are blessed that the Apostle Peter addresses this question. First, he reminds us that God’s perspective from eternity is different than our perspective. Second, he affirms the truth that Jesus died and rose for the forgiveness of the sins of the world. God wants all people to “reach repentance,” which in this context includes coming to faith in Jesus.

Thanks to be our Lord and God for his patience with us.

Until next week, the Lord bless and guide.
