Encourage and Build One Another Up

[11] Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

There are a number of ways we can encourage and build each other up.

The Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 15:1-10 demonstrates our “go-to” method of encouragement: Use scriptural teaching to encourage one another’s faith. In this passage, Paul clarifies for the Thessalonian believers what will happen when Christ returns then gives practical instruction on how to respond to this knowledge.

We have ample opportunity to encourage one another by strengthening each other’s faith. Is a friend having doubts about his salvation? Talk though God’s promises attached to baptism. Does a family member feel like God has become distant in her life? Share scriptural teaching about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

There are times when the most appropriate way to encourage fellow believers doesn’t involve speaking. This is  called “ministry of presence.” We often feel like we have to find the exact right words to comfort or encourage. In reality, sometimes what our friends or family really want is our presence. Sitting in silence with a friend can provide comfort. Actively listening to a family member express her hurts or concerns by itself can be encouraging.

Another way to encourage and build one another up is speaking truth in a difficult circumstance. For example, if a friend is in denial about his role in a conflict, then asking him questions about his role in the conflict is a form of “truth-telling.” I realize some people see truth-telling as tearing down, not building up. As long as the truth-telling is motivated by love, and delivered in winsome way, it can be the most effective way to encourage a brother or sister in Christ.

May Paul’s words to the Thessalonian Christians also be spoken of us: “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”
